Swimming: a physical activity with multiple benefits

Swimming is a broad term that refers to the action of swimming with a Lifeguard Class, whether on the surface or underwater, such as diving, mermaid, synchronized swimming, or diving.
Olympic sport since 1896 for men. For women it is only 16 years later, that is to say in 1912.

If swimming is an exercise that seems very simple for most of us, it could be a little less for some “I say that I say nothing 😉 “

Swimming, or the art of doing sports while having fun!

It is very important to choose a physical activity that we like , that suits us, that we practice with desire and motivation. And in my opinion there is no better than aquatic activities to tame your body gently and lightly .

I never thought I would say these words one day, because yes until this summer I had never put my head under water of my own free will, but since then things have changed.
I assure you I still can’t swim, but I managed to go up to 5 – 6 m deep under water. Without a bottle of course. In short, it’s a very long story!

I discovered sensations, noises, a whole universe that I did not know until then.

So that’s why I’m more motivated than ever to learn to swim, to be comfortable in the water, but above all to float. Because yes I sink without my many floating friends. This was my challenge for the month of September , but unfortunately with the pandemic and the pools closed, it is then postponed.

So I was saying that swimming was a fun exercise with multiple possibilities , which can be practiced in several ways, alone, in a group session, with or without accessories . You can also play with your breathing, have fun changing your rhythm, timing yourself, doing tricks in the water , etc. Free rein to your imagination.

And if you have the chance to swim in the open sea it’s even more wonderful, you can benefit from all the benefits of swimming while contemplating the marine fauna and flora.

I. The benefits of swimming on the body

A sports activity without impact on the joints:

It is certainly one of the first advantages of swimming which can be practiced at any age. It would also be recommended for people who have health problems such as osteoarthritis, arthritis, or even back pain. The reduction in gravity and the feeling of less weight in the water make it easier to move and reduce pain. We would feel that 10% of the weight of our body in the water, in other words, light as a feather.

It tones the muscles without pain:

Swimming is a very complete physical activity, because it solicits the body as a whole (trunk, back, lower limbs and upper limbs), it uses muscles which are used very little in normal times. Since the body is 80% buoyant, movements that are difficult to perform on the ground can easily be performed in the water. In addition, the aquatic environment itself provides resistance that an additional load of weight is not necessary.
Fat burner par excellence:
It is one of the sports that consumes the most energy, 500 calories on average for one hour of effort at moderate speed. As indicated above, the resistance created by the water amplifies the muscular work. The effort seems so minimal in the water that we tend to stay there longer. The most energy-consuming stroke would be the butterfly, but also the most physically and technically demanding.

II. The health benefits of swimming

Engages the Heart and Improves Endurance:

In addition to using all the muscles of the body, swimming is ideal for working the heart in depth while avoiding trauma to the joints. The latter reduces blood pressure and cholesterol levels and, therefore, the risk of cardiovascular disease.
And if you want to improve your endurance through swimming, specialists advise opting for the front crawl, which involves regular and constant movements of the arms and legs.

Improves blood circulation and venous return:

Due to the contraction and relaxation of the muscles, the various movements performed promote blood circulation while limiting water retention. This is especially beneficial for many women. 95% would be regularly affected, due to a fluctuation of hormones. This often happens during menstruation or during pregnancy.
Increases life expectancy:
thanks to its beneficial effects on
cardiovascular health, swimming is one of the sports recommended to extend your life expectancies, such as cycling, aerobics, or even racket sports.
