An email might seem like the simplest possible way to communicate information from one user to another, but it’s actually an incredibly complex piece of technology. Python development tools to send an email, you’ll have to use all sorts of pieces of software and many different protocols at once, so it can be easy to get lost when sending your first email with Python. However, if you follow these ten steps, you’ll be able to send an email in no time!
Step 1. Install the Python module
The first thing you need to do is install the Python module. You can do this by going to the Python website and downloading the latest version. Once you have downloaded the module, open it up and follow the instructions. Be sure to note where you’re installing the program because some operating systems are different from others.
Step 2. Set up your Gmail account
In order to use the Gmail API, you must first set up a Gmail account and enable it for use with less secure apps. To do this, log into your Gmail account and go to Settings. Then, click on the Accounts and Import tab. Next, click on the Other Google Account Settings button. A new window will pop up. Scroll down to the Connected apps & sites section and click the turn-on button.
Step 3. Write the code and send your first email
You’ve now written your first email using Python! This is a huge accomplishment. You can now use this same basic code to send emails to anyone you want. The sky’s the limit! You could create a script that automatically sends thank-you notes after someone donates money to your organization, or sends birthday wishes to all of your friends and family members. Step 4. Create a script with your credentials that you can use over and over again
You can use any text editor to create this script. I like to use nano, but you can also use gedit, vim, or emacs. Just make sure the file extension is .py. You will need four pieces of information to complete this script: your email address, your password, the recipient’s email address, and the subject line of the email.
Step 5. Test out whether your script works
To test whether your script works, simply open up a new terminal window and type in python filename.py. If everything worked out, you should see the Email sent! printed out in the terminal. Step 6. Start sending yourself emails every week
Sending yourself emails is a great way to stay on top of your email game.
Plus, it’s a great way to keep your Python skills sharp. Here’s how to do it in ten easy steps:
1. Open up a new file in your text editor and type out the following code
2. Update the TO_EMAIL field to reflect your own personal email address
3. Update the SUBJECT field with something you want to see in your inbox
4. Update the MESSAGE field with what you want your subject line to say
5. Print() these three fields together so that they appear within quotes
6. Put a carriage return at the end of each line
7. Connect this code together by typing import smtplib; smtp_server = ‘SMTP-mail-server’; smtp_port = 25; SSL = True; as well as importing smtplib
8. Put quotation marks around all of these words (i.e., ‘import smtplib;’)
9. Type the keyword send followed by parentheses and equal signs (i.e., send(FROM_ADDRESS, TO_EMAIL, SUBJECT, MESSAGE)
10. Type another carriage return
11. Save this document as a .py file
12. Type python emailSubjectTest.py
13. Watch for success messages
Step 7. Schedule your email program to send on specific days and times
If you want your email program to send on specific days and times, you’ll need to schedule it. To do this, open your email program and click on the Schedule tab. Then, select the days and times you want your emails to be sent. You can also specify how often you want your emails to be sent (weekly, monthly, etc.).
Step 8. Change your email address (optional)
If you want to change the email address that you’re sending your messages from, you can do so by changing the from address. Keep in mind that some email providers may not allow you to change your address, or they may require you to verify your new address before you can use it. To change your address

Step 9. Replace your personal info with other text (optional)
To send the email, you’ll need to replace a few pieces of information with your own. In the To field, enter the email address of the person you want to send the message to. In the From field, enter your own email address.
The Subject line can be anything you want. When it comes to the text of the message, if you’re using Gmail and are logged into your account, then all you have to do is click Compose and type out what you want to say. If not, then click on the body icon below Compose and write whatever text you want in that area.
To end up typing this blog post out by hand would take so much time! Writing it out programmatically makes it easy because all I have to do is tell my computer what I want my post’s title and introduction paragraph to say and then run some code!
Step 10. Share what you learned here
