The motorized beater brushes on upright vacuums are powerful and clean deep into the carpet. While some canister vacuums only use air suction to remove dirt, most upright vacuums include motors in their brush heads. These motors rotate the brush quickly to lift and loosen dirt.

Canister vacuums produce a lot more noise than upright vacuums. Their motors aren’t as well insulated as canister vacuums. Do your research to find one that isn’t loud enough to disturb the rest of the family every time you vacuum. Consumer Reports tested many vacuums and found Shark’s upright vacuum to be the quietest.

Heavy

CNET.com reports that the average upright vacuum weighs 14 to 17 pounds. This is considerably more than canister vacuums between 8 and 13 pounds.

Although it may not seem like much, this is a significant difference. However, you still need to push and lift the entire weight of an upright vacuum. Canister vacuums can be moved only by the handle and wand, while the bulk of the weight is contained in the canister. It is also difficult to use and carry them upstairs due to the extra weight.

Their weight is a con, but there’s a plus to a heavier vacuum. The vacuum’s weight helps keep the head of the vacuum flat on the ground. It also makes it easier to reach into high-pile rugs and collect dirt.

If you have a larger home (>2000 square feet), an upright vacuum is a good choice if you have a large home (>2000 sq. ft.) that has many rooms with wall-to-wall carpets.

The wide brush heads of upright vacuums allow greater coverage and easier cleaning in large spaces. The powerful motorized brushes can reach deep under the carpet to lift and loosen dirt, dust, and pet hair.

An upright vacuum is best if you are primarily cleaning floors.

If you have difficulty standing and cannot bend over, an upright vacuum is your best choice.

Finally, uprights are generally less expensive than canister vacuums if you want an affordable vacuum.
