The installation of stair risers essentially boils down to peeling them off and gluing them, with some recutting if necessary. For a more detailed description of the installation process, check out our step-by-step guide.
However, creating a custom look for your stairs takes a little more work. For some of the staircase design projects featured in this article, you will need to take many measurements and make cutouts. But, nothing is impossible. Do not worry! Now that you have a better understanding of the materials used let’s see how you can use them creatively!
Color coding
Can’t decide on a color for your stairs? Choose them all! Color coding is an easy way to add a dose of striking personality pre-posting. The bright and contrasting colors are sure to impress. And most importantly, to achieve this look, just cut your stickers into pieces! Get this look by combining strips for your stair risers, solid color, and tile stickers cut in four unequal sizes. Make sure the edges are straight, so you don’t end up with gaps between each color.
For this easy two-tone effect, choose two different shades of riser stickers, one solid color, and cut each in half lengthwise. We love this style, which features one of our favorite color combinations: pink and navy blue. To achieve this look on your staircase, you will need pink sticker strips in two sizes: one to match the height of the riser and another to match the depth of the step, including the stair nosing. For the navy blue sections on the edges of the steps, you can use strips of risers turned to the side and cut.
False stairways
If your personal style deviates from the classic, you’ll love the look of these faux stairways! Give your staircase the charm of a Victorian mansion of 18 century by creative with stickers for risers of solid color. If your staircase is already painted white, achieving this look will be a snap.
Next, cover the step of each step with a strip of stickers of the same length, making sure the sticker is deep enough to wrap around the nose. Note that the measurements of the stickers for the treads and risers will not be the same, so be sure to measure correctly!
Finally, cut the riser stickers into thin strips about 2 to 5 cm thick. Then apply them carefully on either side of the middle part of the run line. Alternatively, you can apply the thin strips on top of the middle section of the run line so that your steps look less imposing. The combination of navy and chalk colors of this false staircase will be ideal in a country-style home!
Ombre steps
Shaded staircase steps are a playful way to brighten up your home without adding too much color to it. It is also a good option if you want to give your stairs a bold new look without complicating your life. After all, this style only uses risers, which makes it easy to cut and install pre-posting.
Divide your stairs into equal sections and assign a shade to each section in order of color gradients. Here the stairs are separated into groups of three, with the darkest shade at the bottom of the steps and the lighter shade at the top. If your staircase is shorter, you can even use a different shade for each step! If you want to stick with a monochrome look staircase while stepping away from the ombre style, consider mixing and matching similar hues as seen here.

This bold look is simple, chic, subtle, yet dramatic. Actually, it attracts attention without being too noticed. Because it isn’t loaded and doesn’t distract, it works well in just about any home style.

However, we know that is just not an option for renters. Fortunately, using vinyl sticker panels gets the job done as well. Plus, you don’t have to wait for the paint to dry!
For this type of design, you will need two sizes of self-adhesive strips: one for the risers and one for the step and nose. After that, all you have to do is peel, glue.
